When I started down this real food journey and began the process of detoxing my diet and my lifestyle from harmful toxic food and chemicals, I had no clue how one of the most toxic rooms in my house was my bedroom.

Most people are clueless that the bed, pillows and bedding that they sleep on every single night contains toxic chemicals that can seriously mess up your body.

The checmial PBDE, or polybrominated diphenly ethers,  alters hormone function and is found in most mattresses. It’s been shown to cause thyroid issues and has been linked to infertility and fetal growth issues.   Formaldehyde, which has been linked to various cancers, and flame retardants are also found in your bedroom.  This is why I highly suggest you invest in a non-toxic mattress and you can read my review of my favorite budget friendly brand here

Pillows are no exception to what’s hiding inside.  You’ll also find formaldehyde and flame retardants in addition to, get ready for it, fungus. Researchers have discovered that most pillows contain millions of fungal spores. The older the pillow, the more spores.

My first recommendation is to get rid of any pillows that are over 2 years old immediately.  My second is to invest in healthy, safe pillows made with non-synthetic materials like wool, feathers or latex.

After doing much research I again, turned to my favorite company Brentwood Home.  I was able to check out the Helena Latex Filled Pillow and Carmel Pillow.  My favorite of the two is the Helena pillow.

The Helena Latex Filled Pillow is filled with a combination of 100% natural latex ribbons and silky-smooth kapok fibers, this pillow is both fluffy and supportive. With resilient latex responding to your movements through the night, the Helena is great for those who sleep in multiple positions. A zippered opening makes it easy to remove or add fill to your desired comfort level, and the 100% organic cotton cover and pesticide-free kapok mean you can sleep safe and sound.

Key Features

  • 100% Organic Cotton Cover
  • All Natural Kapok + Latex Blended Fill (Eco-Institute Certified)
  • Zipper makes it easy to add or remove fill to adjust to the perfect size and firmness for your needs
  • Eco-institute Certified free of synthetic materials

The Carmel Pillow is made with 100% Latex and is very firm. It is ideal for those in need of a firm, supportive foundation through the night. Fixed in a traditional pillow shape, the Carmel offers resilient support with a latex filling that bounces right back. The Carmel never requires fluffing, and healthy materials like 100% organic cotton and natural latex mean you can sleep safe and sound.

Key Features

  • 100% Organic Cotton Cover
  • Molded All-Natural Latex
  • Traditional Pillow Shape
  • Never Requires Fluffing

  1. I would love to try the Beachwood Linen Quilt. I like to curl up on the couch with a good book and a nice warm quilt wrapped around me especially now that winter has set in.

  5. Oh dear. What to do with all these old pillows? And before I can afford more? Thanks for the chance to feel hopeful! I think the gel- feather pillow was curious, too… and not that expensive.

  7. I would love to win these pillows. I would also love to try the wedge pillow. I’ve never seen one before…great for reading in bed, but mostly for acid reflux issues. Thanks for the link to this site. I hadn’t heard of them before.
