Non-Toxic Nail Polishes (2)

Nail Polish for some is just a touch of colour to their wardrobe, others it is a lifestyle. So with all of the different ingredients in nail polishes that are making our bodies incredibly sick, could there possibly be any non-toxic alternatives, to our favorite polishes? The answer is yes! But before I give you a list of the best non-toxic nail polishes that I have found, we need to talk about all of the nasty stuff that goes into our regular polishes.

Toxic Ingredients and the Negative Effects they Have on our Health

There is a “Toxic Trio” of chemicals that are the most commonly used in every day nail polishes. They are dibutyl phlatate (DBP), toluene, and formaldehyde (yes, the stuff that is used on deceased bodies, and our frog dissections from high school.)

DBP, is a chemical known to cause many negative effects on the body, including a study where there was ‘lifelong reproductive impairments in male rats’, it was also linked to birth defects in children that, especially for males, had them have a more ‘feminine personality while playing.’

Toluene, with long exposure, has been known to cause anaemia in the blood, as well as a lower blood count, liver and kidney damage, and has the possibility to affect a growing fetus.

Then of course, we have formaldehyde, which is a skin, eye and respiratory irritant, and it is also a known cause for cancer.

All of these ingredients are used in how the polishes look on our nails. Toluene is used to give a smooth finish, and formaldehyde is used as a hardener and a preservative. Can you imagine that we have used these kinds of products on ourselves, and even our children? Our health is more important than ever in our lives, and it is time that these toxins are removed.
