We’re all looking for ways to save money. But how many of us are looking to save water? And why should we?

We’re all looking for ways to save money. But how many of us are looking to save water? And why should we?

Water is the elixir of life. It’s one of the most healthiest and natural substances there is, and it sustains life. There are no two ways about it; without water, we would die. But there’s every chance we’re using too much of it in our homes, so much so that it’s costing us money and it could be whipping up the storm of a water crisis.

At the most, fresh water makes up 2.75% of all our planets water supply. That’s such a small number and it’s showing no signs of increasing. And yet so many of us will feel as though we have an abundance of water at home. And that abundance causes us to take water for granted, which in turn ramps up our water bill. It may also be contributing to an impending water-supply crisis.

Of, course we need water to bathe, cooke and eat and stay healthy, and the average person gets through up to 100 gallons of water each day. That figure increases in the U.S., where the average American uses as much as 160 gallons each day. That’s a heck of a lot and because America is facing up to a water crisis, we all need to change the way, and the amount of, water we use at home.

But how can we do this while still getting adequate amounts of water? The key is to start using H2O more effectively. Here are 8 tips:

We’re all looking for ways to save money. But how many of us are looking to save water? And why should we?

Stop Using Bottled Water

Bottled water is insanely wasteful. Contrary to what we might like to believe, most plastic water bottles don’t get recycled. In fact, 80% of all plastic water bottles become mere litter. Not cool.

Using bottled water is tempting, especially if your pipes happen to have been found to contain lead. However, there are alternatives, such as filtered tap water. If you can afford it, you could also think about investing in a Kangen water machine, a hugely powerful antioxidant machine that boosts water ionisation.

Either way, a top notch home water filter is a sound long-term investment that will improve your health and help you cut back on waste.

If your budget stretches far enough, why not invest in a water cooler, too?

Use the Dishwasher

It’s an age-old question: What saves more water, the dishwasher or hand washing our dishes?

The answer, surprisingly, is the dishwasher.

Washing dishes with our hands can potentially save us time, but it doesn’t save us water. In fact, it costs us more. Ed Osann, who work for the Natural Resources Defence Council as their water efficiency project director, says: “I think it’s generally recognised that washing by machine would involve less water.:

Dishwashers are far more efficient than they used to be. 20 years or so ago, they were water hogs. If your machine is old, it’s probably not worth using. If, on the other hand, you have a fairly new machine, you really should start using it more.

Get Smarter and Automate your Home

Is your home automated yet? If it isn’t, now’s the time to start adding some smart products to your house that will help you save on water and money.

Household leaks along can cost us more than 10,000 gallons of wasted water per year. The trouble is, we don’t always catch those leaks before it’s too late. Smart home automation products like these can help.

Naturally, leaks shouldn’t be your only concern. If you’re bothered about saving water, there are smart products that can help to this end too, such as a smart shower head or a touch-free faucet which automatically switches on and off when needed or not needed.

There’s also the outdoors to think of too, where an automated sprinkler system can come in handy. Sprinklers waste an incredible amount of water, and this something that can be prevented by investing in smart products.

We’re all looking for ways to save money. But how many of us are looking to save water? And why should we?

Fix your Faucets

Lastly, how are your faucets looking? When was the last time they were checked by a plumber?

Inefficient plumbing costs us more water than we could imagine. Not just this, but it also costs us money and bumps up our utility bills.

Call a plumber over to take a look at your faucets so that they’re in tip top condition!

These are 4 of the best ways to save water and save money in the home. Some will cost a bit to begin with – such as automating your home – but their long term benefits and the value they’ll add to your home will be well worth it. Good luck!
