Even if you’re a complete novice in the kitchen, there are some essential items which you can’t do without. If you’re trying to rustle up a meal at short notice or if you’re trying to prepare something special for an important occasion, there are five items which you can’t manage without. Here they are:
1.Essential Pots And Pans
If you’re going to be cooking anything at all you’re going to need some pots and pans. However, if we’re narrowing it down to the absolute basics you’re going to definitely need a large saute pan for searing food and for preparing stir fries. Versatility is the key here. You want to choose a non-stick pan with ceramic coating. You won’t need to use a high heat with this type of pan – in fact, you should avoid very high temperature settings as the pan could get damaged.
The second type of pan that you’re going to love in your kitchen is a cast-iron skillet. They come in several sizes and shapes but if you don’t have a grill you can choose one with a ridged base that mimics traditional grill marks on your meat or fish. They can easily be cured in your oven with coconut oil or lard so that they’re non-stick. Hard anodized cookware is another useful alternative. By the time you’ve returned from work or after a day out, you’ll have a tasty meal waiting for you all ready to serve. They’re really versatile too. You can use your slow cooker to prepare everything from soups and stews to curries and chilis. You can even make desserts in them, from rice pudding to cakes. They’re the lazy cook’s ultimate solution!
You’re certainly going to need knives in your beginner’s kitchen. There are three key types of knife which you’re require, all for different purposes. The santoku knife is perfect for cutting everything including meat, fish and vegetables. A standard chef’s knife is also useful, especially if you have small hands or need a lightweight knife which won’t hurt your wrist or hands. You’ll also need a paring knife for cutting small fruits and vegetables which would be difficult with a larger knife. If you’re going to be cutting gluten-free sourdough bread, you’ll also require a bread knife. If you’re going to be carving meat, a carving knife will be absolutely essential. Make sure, of course, that you maintain your knives to a good level of sharpness at all times otherwise you could end up injuring yourself.
4.Color Coded Chopping Boards
You’ll need chopping boards to protect your countertops when preparing food, but you need to make sure that hygiene is maintained at all times. The best way to do this is to make sure you have different colored chopping boards for different items. For example, you could use a red board for meat, a blue one for fish and a green one for fruits and vegetables. This will ensure that you don’t accidentally transfer any germs between them which could cause you to get sick.
5.A Hand Mixer
Although a hand mixer isn’t a true essential, it really makes life easier, especially if you’re going to be preparing a lot of sauces or desserts which need to be mixed well to avoid lumps. A hand mixer is a more convenient alternative to a traditional electric mixer and it’s much easier to manipulate and to clean. You’ll never need to mix anything by hand again – a task which is laborious and even painful. Instead, you’ll be able to whip up meals in minutes. Perfect for the beginner cook!
