Starting a new diet can be a challenge, especially when it is surrounded by myths. One of the most significant diets shrouded in myths is the Paleo Diet. This diet is often seen as disruptive and hard to follow. But after wading through the myths, you will find that the paleo diet has changed many lives while teaching people how to be disciplined with their food.

Myth 1: It is a Meat Only Diet

Myth 2: You Eat like a Caveman 

The paleo diet does not mean living the Paleolithic lifestyle, so you will not eat like a caveman. The diet promotes unprocessed, whole, and natural foods similar to the all-natural diet of the caveman. Certain foods like bone broth might seem prehistoric, but these have proven to be healthy practices over human history. 

Most Paleo foods are quite common already, like:

  • Lean meats
  • Fresh veggies
  • Seafood
  • Healthy fats
  • Seeds
  • Nuts

The issue is that refined, processed, packaged, and sugary foods have become so common that this is the norm for most diets. Paleo brings it back to food essentials, but you will not be a caveman by any means! 

Myth 3: Paleo is a Fad Diet 

The Paleo diet is not a passing trend. It stems from Paleolithic times and focuses on supplying our bodies with foods we are designed to eat. This includes all-natural, whole, and unprocessed foods. It’s been a hallmark of healthy eating for decades, showing that paleo is not a short-lived fad. 

Myth 4: It is Expensive 

You do not have to spend a small fortune to maintain a paleo lifestyle, and it is not necessary to eat solely prime cuts of meat. It has been shown that a paleo diet can be followed using the USDA’s Thrifty Food Plan. To make this financially feasible, make informed choices, buy local, and buy in bulk. If you make a conscious effort to save money and follow a budget, you can also maintain a healthy lifestyle. 

Myth 5: There is Not Enough Calcium 

Yes, calcium is essential for healthy bones and teeth and can be found mainly in dairy. A true paleo diet does not involve a lot of dairy, which can cause alarm for some people. However, you are eating a lot of leafy green vegetables, which also provides calcium. You will still have a calcium-rich diet! 

Myth 6: You Cannot Have Carbs 

Contrary to popular belief, carbs are fine in moderation. You will have a healthy amount of carbs instead of carb-overload. The diet is low-carb by nature because nutrient-dense foods are low-carb. Paleo centers on nutrient density, balance, and food quality, so the focus has never been on carbohydrates.  

Myth 7: It is Just Too Hard 

Changing your diet and your lifestyle is always challenging if you are not used to it. You will likely be tempted to throw the whole thing out and get fast-food from a drive-through. However, paleo is no harder than addressing life-threatening illnesses caused by poor diet and health.
