It won’t be long now before the school year comes to a close. Both parents and their children get excited around this time. It’s a break from the busy schedules and an opportunity to spend time enjoying life. With all this downtime, however, you want to find some creative ways to keep the kids occupied. Rather than sit in the house in front of a screen all summer long, you can instead try some of these fun ideas.
If you’re looking for a fun summer family activity that gets you out of the house but doesn’t cost too much, then throw your very own backyard barbecue. You can fire up the grill with fresh protein and veggies, purchase a cheap inflatable swimming pool, and play around until the sun goes down.
Nature Walks in the Park
You’ve spent a better part of the year plugged into the television or computer screen. Now that the weather is right, it’s time to give your eyes a break and be one with nature. Grab the gang and head to a nearby park. As you walk you can point out all the unique things in nature that you find. If you want, the kids can even bring buckets to collect certain items to create an art project when they get back home.
It’s nice to get away from where you live for a while to take in new experiences. For lots of families, that means going on a camping trip. A few updates to your RV like changing fluids, upgrading the tires and purchasing an RV awning fabric replacement and you’re ready to hit the road. You guys can have a ton of fun living in nature for a few days.
Carnivals and Fairs
Many communities use summertime as an opportunity to connect their residents. They often host events including carnivals and street fairs for families to attend. Check with your local city hall to find out when the next fairs or carnivals are coming to town. They’re often very affordable but a lot of fun. Packed with games, prizes, rides, street vendors, and more, you’re sure to have a good time.
Preparing meals during the school year is often hectic. You’ve got limited time and energy to go all out, so you tend to stick to quick and easy meal options. During the summer, however, you have a bit more time to focus on making nutritious meals for your kids. Why not make it a family affair and allow them to pitch in? Find some healthy recipes you’d like to try, make a grocery run to ensure you have all the ingredients. Then, pull out all the supplies you’ll need and delegate an assignment to each child. Once it’s finished, sit down and have a nice family meal together.
Start a Garden
Gardening is a great summer activity for families. It’s a great way to teach children how to grow their own food. Whether you do a window garden or go all out and design a garden in the yard, there are plenty of responsibilities to go around for the kids to get their hands dirty. Throughout the summer, they can help to maintain the garden and watch in amazement as their crops start to grow.
Summer is all about taking a break, so, sometimes a lazy day or two is necessary. During those days it’s raining or you’d simply rather be at home, there are still things you can do with the kids. Watch movies, play games, create crafts, or just spend all day in bed.
When school is out it’s all about family fun in the sun! While it’s okay to sit home on occasion, make the best of this downtime by getting out and having a good time with your kids. Whether you try one, two, or all of these suggestions you guys are sure to create memories that will last a lifetime.
