Retirement can be one of the most fulfilling parts of life, as you finally get extra time to relax, travel, pursue hobbies and spend time with family. But it's important to stay healthy during retirement too, and a renewed focus on health can help you lead a fulfilling lifestyle.

Get Moving

No matter if you’re retired to Arizona or Florida, where the population grows by nearly 1,000 each day, you’ll likely find clubs and groups that promote physical activity. Senior groups usually meet regularly to participate in group exercise and it’s a great way to make friends too.

Of course, you can always find ways to exercise on your own too. If you’re looking to do your own thing, consider joining a bowling league or a golf league. It’s estimated the average golfer burns 350-475 calories an hour during a round, so if you’re an avid golfer, getting out on the course with friends is a great idea. If you want something you can do with grandkids, try video games that include movements such as a VR game or a Nintendo Wii. There are more than 200 conditions that affect joints with arthritis, specifically osteoarthritis, being one of the most common. As long as you’re staying active, you’ll keep your joints healthier and help ward off or delay those aging conditions.

Stay Connected

No matter how old you are, staying connected to friends and family can do a lot of good for your health. This is even more true in retirement since most people’s daily interactions with others are through work. Even at a time when social distancing is being practiced, calling someone, scheduling a virtual meet-up, or even sending a card can keep you connected to those you care about.

Keep Your Mind Active

It’s important to stay physically active in retirement, but you’ll want to keep your mind sharp too. Activities like word searches, crosswords, and Sudoku puzzles, are a great way to keep your mind active. You can also look into taking classes if there’s a local college or university nearby.

Learn Something New

The old saying that you can’t teach an old dog new tricks doesn’t have to be true in retirement. Learning something new is a great way to expand your horizons, whether it’s a mental activity or a physical one. If you’re not as comfortable with computers as you’d like to be, you can take classes to learn. If you are, you can try something new like building a website. If you’ve always wanted to learn how to play an instrument, now is the perfect time to do it.

Join a Senior Center

It’s estimated that 20% have indicated they think the health care system isn’t prepared to deal with an aging population. As such, joining a local senior center is a great idea. Senior centers offer assistance with navigating health care and senior care services, but they also offer lots of fun activities including dances, ice cream socials, and bingo games. If you’re feeling lonely and looking to make some new friends, a senior center membership is a great thing to pursue.

Volunteer

Retirement might mean you’re done actively working, but it doesn’t mean you need to stop contributing. Volunteering in your community is a great way to give back and gives you access to physical activity and social interaction, which boosts your overall health.

The world can be your oyster in retirement. By staying active, both mentally and physically, you’ll lead a fulfilling life and be able to better interact with friends, family, and the people you care about the most.
