As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to impact society, staying connected to others is a priority.

Human connection during coronavirus is incredibly important because it nurtures your soul and emotional wellbeing. It may not be easy to notice, but the need to isolate and the fear prompted by the pandemic has a serious effect on your mental state.

With no end currently in sight, this can easily cause feelings of despair, sadness, anger, and misery. More importantly, it is likely making you feel alone.

Loneliness exacerbates the mental toll of coronavirus, giving you a great reason to reach out to others. Considering that you can’t easily meet with others, you’ll need to make use of digital alternatives to connect with your friends and family.

To give you some ideas for spending time with others from a distance, we’ll go over a few great suggestions below.

Phone Calls

You can start by going old school and opting for phone calls.

Smartphones are so common today that most people prefer text messaging and similar quick chat apps. While this is a good way to stay in touch, it lacks a personal appeal and won’t feel very genuine.

Text messaging involves wait times between sending and receiving texts, a lack of emotion (which can be supplemented with emojis), and often involves shorthand that can further reduce the impact of communicating.

On the other hand, a phone call feels extremely personal. You’ll get to hear your friend or family member’s voice, which instantly makes the interaction more intimate and allows for the expression of emotion and laughter.

Additionally, phone calls entail a constantly flowing conversation. You won’t have little pauses that break up your communication and this makes it much more enjoyable.

With this in mind, talking on the phone is an easy way to feel connected because you can hear the people you love.

Simultaneous Video Chat Activities

Video chatting can be a decent option if you add in simultaneous activities.

While you can certainly video chat and have video conferences, you might not enjoy them. It can be difficult and boring to sit in front of a camera and interact with someone on a screen.

On the other hand, you can use video chat as a way to hang out remotely. You can participate in the same activity as a friend or family member despite being in different locations.

A few great ideas for this include cooking the same meal, watching the same TV show, or doing artwork. Anything that you can both participate in and appreciate sharing the experience makes for a great choice.

When you participate in simulation video chat activities, it feels like you’re spending quality time with your loved ones. It feels less forced and gives you something to connect over and enjoy together.

Group Video Games

You can also play group video games to have some fun and let off some steam together.

This is in the same vein as doing the same activity over video chat, except video games are typically more accessible because they often offer online multiplayer options.

There are many types of video games that are appropriate for people of all ages. Whether you play something simple like card games or something complex like an MMORPG (massively-multiplayer online role-playing game), it’s more fun when you aren’t playing alone.

If you have the same video game consoles as friends or family members, consider playing a few games together. Alternatively, many free games can be found on the computer or even through apps on your smartphone.

Gaming together is a great way to bond because you’ll share the experience. It will give you something to talk about and make you feel excited every time you have a group gaming session planned.

Create Gifts

A final idea is to create gifts for your friends and family.

This tactic is much different from the others because it is indirect. Rather than directly communicating, you can create something for them and send it in the mail.

Creating gifts can have a significant impact because it requires your time and effort. When you put in the time and effort to show your loved ones that you are thinking of them and that you care, it will make a huge impact and help them feel supported.

It doesn’t have to be anything complicated. You can make a nice card, draw a picture, knit some socks, make a necklace, or any other handmade crafting skill you have.

While your gift recipients won’t see you, they’ll feel your presence in the form of your gifts. This can greatly uplift them and will help you feel connected.

Closing Thoughts

While connection may seem impossible during the coronavirus pandemic, you don’t need to feel alone. You can feel close to your loved ones despite the distance if you take the time to prepare activities that you’ll both enjoy.

In particular, a few great suggestions include phone calls, simultaneous video chat activities, and group video games. You can also provide indirect support by creating handmade gifts.

The more connected you feel to those who matter most, the better equipped you’ll be to handle the stress of coronavirus. If you don’t have to do it alone, seek the support of those around you to help you make it through this pandemic.
