Many of us have dreams of beginning a vegetable garden, but is it really viable? Most have question on how hard it is to grow your own garden and aren’t sure where to find the right answers. I’ve found had success on some sites online or even better consult Greenville garden specialists to get one on one support for garden growing.

More to the point, is it worth it? Vegetables are grown in bulk and sold quite cheaply, so you may think that while growing your own might be fun, it’s not financially worth doing. This may be the case, but there are savings to made in growing your own, and there’s more to it than simply harvesting vegetables at the end of the season.

Gardening is known to be good for one’s mental health. There is a certain satisfaction in watching plants you’ve grown – whether from seed or from seedlings – mature and become producers of the vegetables you can eat with your meals. It’s also great to watch it happen, and while there is some maintenance involved in growing your own vegetables, it is minimal and can be a lot of fun. It’s also something to focus your mind.

Where to plan your vegetable garden? This can be a problem for a lot of people who don’t have a large garden or yard, or who have a lawn or flower garden that is preferred space.

However, there are ways to grow vegetables without the problem of space. Using grow bags, people have started vegetable gardens on the balcony of apartments, or on a small patio in the yard. But we think there’s a better choice – the garden tower. What is a garden tower, and why are they great for growing vegetables?

What is a Garden Tower?

A garden tower is a great solution for those who do not have a lot of space to play with. They can be used for flowers as well as vegetables, and they are also a great addition to bigger gardens as they look great when they are in use. Usually, a garden tower is made from a plastic resin – hard wearing and designed to withstand the weather – and will consist of several ‘layers’ on top of each other. There are various different designs, and you can learn how it works in general by reading that article.

Rather than planting your vegetables in a bed on the ground, you fill the garden tower as instructed with compost and use it as the growing space. It’s easy to use and very simple to get going. Some have a central watering and compost tunnel – these can be quite sophisticated – while others are simpler designs that are just pots, reducing in size, one on top of another with space between. Look around your garden center or hardware store, and you’ll see examples that should give you an idea.

They can be surprisingly cheap and should last you many seasons and are a good introduction to anyone looking to start growing vegetables. However, there are some vegetables that grow well in a garden tower and others that will not do so well. Let’s have a look at what you can expect to grow successfully.

What to Grow in a Garden Tower?

The only problem with a garden tower is that the bowls in which you plant the vegetables may be quite shallow. It’s worth looking around for one that you like the look of, as the deeper, the better. Potatoes, for example, are a root crop that needs a lot of space, so you may find they are not suited to a garden tower. However, a good tip for growing potatoes is to grow them in a thick plastic bag filled with compost, or a bin or bucket of a decent size!

In your garden tower, you can start with the likes of lettuce and cabbage, both of which are easy to grow and take very little looking after. You may also finder smaller root crops such as beet can be grown in a tower, and tomato plants should thrive if they have space to grow upwards – perhaps from the top tier. Leaf crops such as kale are excellent in a garden tower, and why not add a little fruit in the shape of strawberries, which grow very well in this type of planter? So, not you know what you want to grow, the question is, do you grow from seed?

Seed or Plant

Growing from seed is very satisfying as you get to see the entire growing process. However, seeds can be difficult to germinate, and there’s nothing more disappointing than sowing a tray of seeds and nothing happening. We recommend you buy good small seedlings, plants that have been grown to a point where they need to be transplanted and put them straight into good compost in your garden tower.

A garden tower is an excellent way to grow vegetables whether you have a small or large space, and they really do look great, so search for one now, and you’ll soon be enjoying fresh veg grown by your own hand.
