brentwood home review Non-Toxic Mattress

Many people do not realize how toxic their mattresses or other bedroom/nursery items and furniture can be and all the hidden dangers associated with them.

Why You Should Reconsider Your Toxic Mattress

When you spend about one-third of your life in bed, you want to make sure you’re not only getting a restful night’s sleep, but also that you and your family are not being exposed to harmful chemicals from your mattresses.

Most conventional mattresses contain toxins that can affect your health and cause serious complications like respiratory problems, asthma, allergies, skin irritations, cancer and more.

There is a higher risk when it comes to infants and children because they sleep more than adults, on average up to 18 hours for babies, and they are more sensitive to toxins around them because they are developing and metabolizing faster. One of the leading theories surrounding SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) is toxic mattresses. The harmful chemicals can interfere with their breathing and cause nerve damage (source).

The scariest part is that you may not even know about these harmful substances because it is not a requirement for manufacturers to disclose which chemicals their mattresses contain.

So, what makes mattresses so toxic?

One reason that many of these harmful chemicals are being used is because of the flame-retardants requirements. By law, all U.S. mattresses must be highly flame-retardant, to the extent that even if a blow torch was taken to it, it wouldn’t catch fire. Therefore, to comply with these legal laws and regulations, companies use many chemicals to pass the flame-retardant tests.

One of the most commonly used is polybrominated diphenyl ether or PBDE. According to Dr. Mercola, “PBDEs, which have been banned in Canada, Europe and several states, build up in your body over time, and what you absorb or inhale does not go away. This is concerning not only because of the health problems PBDE is associated with (brain and reproductive damage, decreased sperm quality, thyroid problems and even cancer at high levels), but also because of how pervasive these chemicals have become.

PBDEs are not only in mattresses, they’re also in furniture and countless other household products. Not surprisingly, the chemicals are now showing up in breast milk, blood tests and even umbilical-cord blood and livers of fetuses.

Other flame-retardant chemicals currently approved for use in mattresses include:

  • Boric acid, a toxic respiratory irritant used to kill roaches
  • Antimony, a metal that may be more toxic than mercury
  • Formaldehyde, which causes cancer (source)

Another leading danger comes from off-gassing, where odors and fumes are emitted from chemicals that are on the inside and outside of the mattress that you breathe in or absorb through your skin. Even when the smell goes away, the off-gassing can continue for the life of the mattress.

Other sources of harmful substances come from waterproofing, foam fillers, and adhesives.

Natural and Organic Mattresses

Instead of purchasing the conventional mattress, you may be looking into natural or organic mattresses. However, many companies will throw around words like “natural” or “organic” to lure you in, but not be able to back up any of their claims. You always want to make sure you know where the materials are coming from, how they are being prepared and how the product is being made.

According to this article, “Just because a mattress is called organic does not mean that it’s non-toxic. It really depends on all the materials used. A mattress can be called organic if it contains any organic component such as an organic cotton filling or even just an organic cotton surface fabric. Some organic mattresses have organic cotton filling with a vinyl covering. These may be called organic mattresses, but because of the vinyl covering (and most likely chemical fire retardants), these mattresses are obviously not all that healthy. It’s important to check into all materials used, and it can be difficult to get full disclosure from the retailers or the manufacturer.”

So, where can you find a non-toxic mattress and other bedroom/nursery items?

Introducing Brentwood Home (Get a 10% off Brentwood Home Coupon Here)

Brentwood Home is a family-owned business in California that has been crafting mattresses for over 30 years. Their number one objective is quality, so they work with a team of local artisans and fabricators to make the highest quality products. They operate their own factory in Los Angeles and use only the finest local materials, from natural fibers to hand tufting. They are all about comfort and clean living, which I love.

Brentwood Home states, “California has always been at the forefront of environmental regulation, implementing policies that are eventually followed by the rest of the country. We meet and exceed these standards by using a combination of organic, nontoxic, and natural materials with no chemical retardants, phthalates, ozone depleters, or heavy metals.”

All of their handcrafted products promote a healthy lifestyle and reflects the quality that they have come to be known for. Personally, I love that everything is made-to-order, comes from California, and there is absolutely ZERO smell (or off-gassing) on any of their products. Sometimes, when you purchase something from a big box store, when you open it, it can smell pretty funky. Not with Brentwood Home! There was NO SMELL when we opened our mattress.

I also love how inexpensive they are. Comparable mattresses of this kind of high-quality can cost $6,000 or more! Brentwood Home has very affordable prices on all their products that practically anyone can manage to buy. I got my Coronado queen mattress for just $995. It really was a steal!

Sweetpea Changing Pad

The Sweetpea Changing Pad is perfect for when it’s time to change the baby, which can always be a challenge. This pad forms to the baby’s body and helps to minimize wiggling and keeps them comfortable. The cover is specially designed with a bubble-quilt texture that allows the baby to grab and explore the surface with their fingers (very cool!). I also love how easy the cover can be removed, washed and replaced, if needed, and the surface underneath is waterproof and free of harmful chemicals.

Other features:

  • Contoured sides fit all waists, props and lifts the baby to a more ergonomic position, preventing rolling or too much wiggling
  • Removable slipcover for simple washing
  • Breathable fabric keeps the child cool and comfortable
  • Fits most changing pad tables
  • Made in their Los Angeles workshops
  • CertiPUR-US Certified Foam
  • Completely nontoxic and free of phthalates and heavy metals.

Honeysuckle Nursing Pillow

The Honeysuckle Nursing Pillow is perfect for when it’s time to nurse the baby. It’s actually a 2-in-1 pillow that can be used to nurse and used as a sit-up pillow when the baby gets older. This product is also specially designed with the bubble-quilt texture, like the changing pad, so the baby can gain more experience touching and grasping. The cover can also easily be removed, washed and replaced.

Other features:

  • The versatile honeysuckle nursing pillow features a stretch panel to fit all waists
  • Props and lifts the baby to a more ergonomic position, relieving your arms and back, preventing fatigue
  • Removable slipcover for simple washing
  • Made in their Los Angeles workshops
  • Meets and exceeds federal flammability and CPSC standards
  • Completely nontoxic and free of phthalates and heavy metals

Coronado Mattress

I bought the Coronado Mattress for the nursery since I will be co-sleeping with my little one once he’s born, and I absolutely love it. It combines a traditional mattress’ craftsmanship with the comfort of gel memory foam. The gel memory foam is amazing because it contours to your entire body and keeps you cool because of the ventilated foam layer. The handstitched tape edges and four-way stretch knit on top helps to keep the mattress from bowing, which helps give it a longer “bedroom life.” The therapeutic support it gives my body allows me to get a good night’s sleep every night.

Other features:

  • Medium feel
  • Gel memory foam adds pressure relief and sleeps cool for more comfort
  • New Zealand wool liner wicks away moisture and is naturally antimicrobial for a cooler, fresher mattress
  • 4-way stretch knit on top improves comfort and longevity
  • 4 upholstered handles to easily move or adjust your bed without hassle
  • Handmade in their workshops in Los Angeles and certified free of ALL harmful chemicals, including harmful fire retardants, phthalates, and heavy metals
  • 25-year warranty and 120-night guarantee

I can’t recommend Brentwood Home and their products enough. So, if you’re looking for high-quality, non-toxic mattresses or other bedroom/nursery-related items, you’ll definitely want to check them out.
