What does self-care look like? We all know the importance of self-care as a way to stay grounded and navigate our day-to-day lives, but practicing it is another story entirely. Even people with the busiest schedules can find time for a little self-care. Indeed, it might be the busiest people who need self-care the most. Read below for some quick habits you can start practicing today to help you look after yourself.
Write it out
Journaling has been known to be extremely therapeutic, but it can be daunting to know just where to start. You can do this at the beginning and end of every day to truly cultivate a sense of gratitude. Building up this habit can help you decrease stress and alleviate emotions such as envy and jealousy in the long run. You don’t need a fancy journal to get started, either. Whether it’s on the side of your planner or in an old notebook you’ve never used, the best thing to do is to start writing.
Stretch it out
In relation to the previous point, sometimes taking care of your physical health can do wonders for your mental health. While you may already be working out and exercising on your own time, remember to take a moment and stretch it out. Doing a 30 to 40-minute yoga session three times a week helps keep that mind and body connection strong while also reminding you to move with your breath. A cluttered space means a cluttered mind. The space you live in has a direct relationship to how you move about in the world: a cleaner space allows you to be more productive. Every week, set aside one day dedicated to cleaning up your personal space, like your room or your home office. You can even use these weekly clean-ups as a way to redecorate in small ways. Changing the throw pillows or adding new shelf decorations can help keep things lively and keep your environment fresh.
Make the most of your short breaks
Most people believe they don’t have enough time for self-care, but in fact you can take advantage of the short breaks in your life, such as your lunch break at work. For busy bees looking to make the most out of their mealtime me-time, try reading, reaching out to friends, or even learning a new language, suggests a post by Gala Bingo. The most important thing is to carve out some meaningful time for yourself. When coupled with your favorite smoothie or snack, these simple activities will have you recharged in no time.
Break up with your phone
Our phones have become external limbs for us at this point, but it doesn’t have to be this way. The most important thing is to get to the emotional truth of your phone usage and figure out why you need to constantly check it. Your phone can definitely keep you connected, and it’s beneficial to keep in touch. However, if you find yourself feeling that your using your phone too much then you should step away from it for a few hours everyday.
The truth is that when it comes to self-care, you have to mindfully seek out the time to engage with yourself. Self-care means making yourself a priority, and that entails finding pockets of time that allow you to do just that.
