College enrollment in the last year increased 195% since 1970. When you attend graduate school you should find ways to maintain a healthy lifestyle. In this article, we will cover maintaining a healthy diet, managing stress, exercising, connecting with other students, and getting enough rest.

Eat A Healthy Diet

Try to get on a healthy eating plan in graduate school to maintain your energy and health. Your diet should include plenty of fresh vegetables and fruits, lean meats, poultry, and fish. In the cafeteria, look for whole-grain bread, pasta, and grains with fibers. Stay away from too much sugar and drink soda in moderation. Try to eat healthy snacks. Popcorn, yogurt, fruit, nuts, healthy spreads on bread, and granola are all great options. Take breaks and eat healthy snacks to maintain your energy and take time to eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Too much sugar in baked goods, desserts, and bread can lead to hunger and eating more than needed. If you need a special diet, consulting a dietitian or nutritionist to help with a diet plan is advised.

Devise An Exercise Routine

Regular exercise when going to graduate school will relieve stress and help with maintaining your health. Walking on campus, cycling, working out at the gym, exercising in your room with a video are all good ways to work out during your studies. Find an exercise that you like to do so you will maintain the routine. It can be something outdoors or indoors. Many campuses have gyms and facilities to work out with machines and classes. Some campuses have pools that students can use in the winter and warmer weather. Swimming is the fourth most practiced sport in the United States by men and women. Most colleges have regular sports students can participate in and facilities for exercise. A half-hour of exercise every day improves your health.

Get Enough Sleep and Keep Your Room Organized

Try to get enough sleep every night, about seven to eight hours is the key. You should turn off your laptop or TV an hour before bedtime and do not drink caffeinated beverages too late at night. Try reading, meditating, or drawing before bedtime. Listen to the radio or music, anything that can relax you and help you sleep. Set an alarm in the morning so you wake up on time. Clean your desk, bookcase, and other surfaces in your room regularly. Change your bed linens weekly and wash them unless you have a laundry service. Wipe off your computer or laptop and desk regularly to keep it clean and sanitary. Dusting and vacuuming your room regularly keeps dirt and dust from building up.

Learn to Manage Stress

Learn some breathing techniques that help reduce stress almost anywhere you are in the classroom, dorm room, walking, or socializing. Breathing techniques can be found on the Internet and are easy to learn. They have videos and articles on the subject. You can find this information by using Google or other search engines. Google processes over 3.5 billion search engines per day on many different topics. Yoga, routine exercises in the dorm room are other practices that can reduce stress in graduate students. These techniques improve your health when practiced regularly. Some graduate students listen to music when studying for concentration and relaxation.

Connect With Other Students

Try to connect with other students in your classes to study or work on projects. Try to join a club or group where you will learn and meet new people on campus. Many colleges have clubs and organizations for students to participate in. This can be a way to learn and meet those with similar interests. Think about rooming with another grad student. This cuts expenses and connects you with another person. Joining a class or workout group at the gym is another way to connect with other students. Try to talk or connect with family members weekly to discuss how you are doing.

Overall, if you follow the above tips, this will help with stress during grad studies. Reducing stress will improve your health and help you perform better during the semester.
