Moving day is known as one of the biggest stressful days of the year, but that does not have to be the case. That day is generally chaotic and irritating, but it may turn into a memorable one for the entire family if you plan ahead and find professional movers. The key is treating the moving day less like a logistics problem and more like a shared family adventure. Approached the right way, moving day can be less about what is being left behind and more about whatโ€™s ahead.

Reframing Moving Day as an Adventure, Not a Chore

Kids and even adults will have the same energy as the person leading the move would have. But when it’s framed as the start of something new, for example, a new room to decorate or a new place to put a favourite piece of furniture, or a new adventure on the other side of the door, the tone of the day changes.

Small adjustments to a language can make a big difference, discussing where everything will go in the new space or asking children to imagine how it will look. In brief, the moving experience that everyone has can be the one that you tell.

Fun Ways to Involve Kids in the Packing Process

Often the longest task of moving involves packing, but itโ€™s also the simplest place to add some fun. When children have a role to play and not to be kept out of it, hours of box-taping become something they want to take part in.

  • Allow them to decorate their personal moving boxes with markers or stickers.
  • Give them a “moving passport” to put a stamp on every room or item that is packed.
  • Empower them to decide where a beloved object should be placed, be it a piano or a bookshelf.

Giving up any part of the process usually takes a stressful situation and makes it one of the more memorable parts of the day when it comes to packing or prepping.

Making Moving Day Itself Feel Like a Celebration

Whether it is a whole family relocation or just a big piece of furniture, the day itself is one of the most important aspects of the experience and is worth treating as a big event.

  • Listen to a moving day playlist to help keep your energy levels high while loading and unloading.
  • Have a โ€œlast mealโ€ or โ€œfirst mealโ€ in the old space with the familyโ€™s favourite spot or in the new space
  • Give the mover a break from the logistics and let the family enjoy the day together without having to spend it packing and unpacking and without having to worry about the fragile items.
  • Snap a few pictures or take a video of the moment that the space is no longer yours.

These small additions don’t take much extra time or effort, but they change how the day feels and that’s often worth more than saving a few minutes on the schedule.

Settling Into the New Home as a Family

The final stages of moving day can be easily missed, but it’s worth planning for, whether that means settling into a new home or simply placing one item exactly where it belongs. It is best to start with basics first, for example beds made, basic items in the kitchen unpacked, etc, whatever the room is that is used the most, make this one workable first.

All else can wait until the next day without causing problems. It takes about 30 or 40 minutes to sit down, drink coffee and confirm what goes where. This actually saves overall time. Also, taking a break before general unpacking can actually help the unpacking process to move quicker.
