We are aware of the visible physical body and unaware of the invisible mental body (for thinking), emotional body (manages feelings), the etheric body (seen as the ghost after death), and the memory body (stores memories). The invisible bodies are superimposed on the physical body and they exchange energy with it through the chakras. Science is catching up as doctors have found that thoughts and emotions are responsible for many physical diseases.
The chakras are spinning wheels of energy that are superimposed over major body organs, major bundles of nerves and glands. Each chakra has its own frequency of vibration which is indicated by a specific color which can be seen by people who have the ability to see the aura, the energy field around the human body. Each chakra manages specific functions, organs, glands, behavior traits, abilities, and feelings (1).
Though there are many chakras in the body, we are concerned with the seven major chakras which are:
- The base chakra.
- The sacral chakra.
- The solar plexus chakra.
- The heart chakra.
- The throat chakra.
- The brow chakra.
- The crown chakra.
The chakras are important because they are pathways for the movement of energy. It is important that they stay moving, open and balanced. If there is a blockage in a particular chakra (in the same way that we allow solids to keep going into the sink and it eventually becomes blocked) the result is malfunction of the affected organ and illness. For example, a constantly sore throat may be an indicator of a blocked throat chakra.
- The Base Chakra
The base chakra or root chakra (known as muladhara in Sanskrit) is located in the base of the spine in the tailbone area encompassing the bladder, the colon and the first three vertebrae. Its color is red. It represents the foundation, security, feelings of being grounded, and human basic needs. Emotionally it represents survival issues, food and financial independence. When it is working optimally, we feel safe and fearless and can create abundance (2) (3). When the base chakra is unbalanced, we experience issues with money and we feel ungrounded.
Healing exercise: Walking barefoot, stomping your feet, and the Bridge Pose.
- The Sacral Chakra
Also known as the navel chakra (or Svadhisthana in Sanskrit), this chakra is located above the pubic bone and below the navel. It is orange in color. It is in charge of human connections and ability to accept people and new experiences. At emotional level it is linked to the sense of abundance, pleasure, well-being, sexuality and creativity (2) (3). Blockages of this chakra are indicated by sexual inhibition mostly due to societal conditioning.
Healing exercise: the dancer’s pose, the child pose, and the twisting triangle (4).
- The Solar Plexus
Known as the Manipura in Sanskrit, this chakra is located in the upper abdomen in the stomach area. It is yellow in color. It is our source of personal power and it represents our ability to be confident and in control (2) (3). A healthy solar plexus is indicated by mental abilities, assertiveness, willpower, and personal power. Imbalance is indicated by lack of direction, inability to make decisions, excessive control, irresponsibility, helplessness, being manipulative, etc.
Healing stones: tiger’s eye, yellow tourmaline and citrine.
Essential oils: chamomile, cedar wood and bergamot oils (5).
- The Heart Chakra
Known as the Anahata in Sanskrit, the heart chakra is located in the center of the chest above the heart. It is green in color but in a very loving person you can find rose pink hues in it. It unites the lower physical chakras and the upper spiritual chakras, so it is the bridge between the body and the spirit. It is in charge of love, connection, joy and inner peace (2) (3).
Healing stones: green calcite, jade, clear quartz and pink quartz.
Healing essential oils: jasmine, bergamot, ylang ylang, geranium and rose.
Foods: Leafy green vegetables and green tea.
- The Throat Chakra
The throat chakra is also known as the Vishuddha in Sanskrit. It is blue in color and it is located in the throat above the thyroid gland. It is responsible for expression of feelings, communication abilities, ability to speak our truth, life purpose and creativity. It encompasses the mouth, the tongue, the jaws, the thyroid and parathyroid glands and the neck (2) (3). When it is blocked, you can feel timid, insecure and introverted. When it is overactive, you talk nonstop, gossip and can be verbally aggressive or mean (6).
Healing exercises: Singing, chanting and the shoulder pose.
Healing foods: All types of fruits, juices and teas.
- The Brow Chakra
The brow chakra, also known as the third eye or the Ajna (in Sanskrit) is located on the forehead between the eyebrows. It is blue or bluish-purple and linked to the pineal gland. It is associated with our ability to focus on and see the bigger picture, our intuition, imagination, wisdom and ability to think and make decisions (2) (3). It is also linked to psychic abilities and perception of subtle dimensions and movements of energy and access to mystical states, inspiration and creativity. Imbalance is linked to feeling stuck, lack of vision, rejection of spiritual matters and lack of clarity. Overactivity manifests as indulgence in psychic illusions and fantasies (7).
Healing exercises: Eye exercises, Child’s Pose or other yoga poses with forward bends.
Healing foods: Lavender colored spices or tea, purple colored fruits like blueberries and grapes, and chocolate.
- The Crown Chakra
The crown chakra, known as Sahasrara in Sanskrit, is located at the top or crown of the head. It is white or deep purple and it is associated with the pituitary gland, the hypothalamus, the brain and the nervous system. It represents enlightenment, ability to be fully connected to spirit and other people, consciousness, wisdom, ecstasy, bliss, and self realization. Imbalance manifests as disconnected from spirit, constant cynicism regarding the sacred. An overactive chakra manifests as living in the head, disconnection from the body and earthly matters, and obsession on spiritual matters (8).
