Whether you’re dealing with rapidly approaching deadlines or falling behind targets, it’s easy for workplace stress to continue outside of the workplace. In fact, a recent study found that work is often regarded as “the most stressful factor in people’s lives”, ranking above financial struggles and even relationship problems.
As a result, it’s important that you are able to combat workplace stress by giving yourself a breather during your downtime. That is, you should be able to leave the stress associated with your job at your desk. This will:
- Improve your mental wellbeing.
- Reduce burnout and low productivity.
- Encourage you to value your private time more highly.
However, shutting off after a busy day is easier said than done – which is why so many of us find ourselves lying awake at night thinking about how many emails we have to send the next day.
With that in mind, here are some top tips you can use to relax after a stressful day at work.
Turn off your work phone. Turning off your work phone after you’ve clocked out is one of the easiest ways to leave the stress of work behind, as it stops you from checking your messages, responding to calls or answering emails at a time when you won’t be paid to do so. If you use your regular phone at work, turn off any work-related notifications. Remember, any emails will still be there in the morning.

After all, when you do not get enough sleep, the most minor inconvenience at work can feel catastrophic. Poor sleep impacts your cognitive function and productivity levels, which means you could fall behind, resulting in only more stress.
