Bad knee joints can be extremely painful and it can affect people of all ages. It is usually caused by injury or Arthritis. The worst part of having bad knee joints, other than the pain itself, is that it limits people with their daily activities. However, there are ways to at least lessen the pain. Other than medications, diet plays an essential role in this matter. If you’re dealing with bad knee joints or helping a loved one cope with the pain, here are foods to include in the diet.
Fatty fish– tuna, mackerel, and trout are a great source of omega-3 fatty acids that can help fight inflammation. This is one of the highly recommended foods for people suffering from Arthritis pain. The omega-3 fatty acids have properties that can enhance joint mobility. It increases the blood flow during exercise and decreases stiffness.
Sulforaphane-rich food– this compound is known to help slow cartilage damage in joints brought by osteoarthritis. Examples of food rich in sulforaphane are veggies from the cruciferous family such as cauliflower, cabbage, and kale. The richest source of sulforaphane is broccoli sprout.
Nuts– almonds, walnuts, and other nuts are known for their anti-inflammatory nature. Research suggests that people who regularly consume nuts have lower levels of inflammatory markers in the blood than those who don’t. The best thing about nuts is you can have them as a snack or use to add flavor to any main dish.
Vitamin C-rich foods- Studies suggest that the antioxidants in vitamin C may slow the progression of osteoarthritis. It’s no secret that Vitamin C has tons of benefits and it is the most powerful antioxidant. There are many vitamin C supplements out in the market but you can also get Vitamin C from fruits like kiwi, blueberries, and strawberries. Other than citrus fruits and berries you may also want to have plenty of sweet peppers on your diet.
Avocado– it contains healthy fats that are great at losing weight. When you’re dealing with bad knee joints, it is recommended that you maintain a healthy weight to control the inflammation. Avocado has many health benefits, that is why there is no doubt that it belongs to the list of the healthiest foods on the planet.
Your overall diet can prevent and manage any pain in the knee joint. Take note that the foods mentioned above will not cure your knee joint but they can help reduce the inflammation, maintain your weight, and boost your immune system.
Aside from knowing the best foods to eat, it would also help to have an idea which ones to avoid. Experts advised staying away from grilled, fried, and processed foods as much as possible because they can trigger inflammation. Limit fast food, soda, and alcohol. They can acerbate joint discomfort symptoms.
Also, avoid sugar and refined carbs because the high amounts of sugar in the diet can result in increased advanced glycation end product that later increases inflammation. If you cannot avoid them completely, at least cut down on foods that inflame.
When you have bad knee joints, it’s best to consult a doctor to get the proper medication. It would also help to wear knee sleeves to protect your knees when moving.
I would also recommend bone broth – I notice a significant improvement in my knee (serious injury in 2011) after I started using bone broth daily
I completely agree Penny!
