What Is a Green Tea Shot?

The green tea shot is a Jameson whiskey-based cocktail with a mellow taste and a mix of sweet and sour flavors. It’s your summer cocktail of choice when in need of quick refreshment!

Although you might think green tea is the secret ingredient that makes this cocktail unique, there’s no actual green tea in the classic recipe!

Why Is It Called Green Tea Shot?

The name comes from the green hue and not from the actual tea.

The Jameson green tea shot has a light greenish-yellow color that resembles the one of green tea. Hence you won’t cure any heart disease, but you’ll indeed have fun with Jameson Irish whiskey and peach schnapps.

What’s the Origin of a Green Tea Shot?

The classic green tea shot is the invention of the Jameson whiskey company.

They’ve managed to create an alcoholic drink that’s simple yet of exquisite taste – the company knows its business! To stay true to the original recipe, opt for Jameson Irish whiskey.

However, if you want to experiment, feel free to try Japanese, Irish or American whiskey which stands out for its supreme quality but has a slightly different taste.

Ingredients

To make this sweet, peachy, and bright cocktail, you first need to gather up all the ingredients. You won’t have trouble finding them since they’re available in almost every market and liquor store.

The powerful kick from the whiskey peach schnapps combo with a touch of lemon-lime soda will warm up your throat just right!

The recommended measure is enough to make four green tea shots:

bucket of ice, Jameson Irish whiskey, Peach Schnapps, sour mix and sprite

Equipment

To achieve the perfect balance of taste and flavors, it’s best to have special cocktail-making tools!

You’ll feel like a true professional – pouring and shaking the ingredients to perfection.

All you need is:

If you don’t have a cocktail shaker, worry not. Mason jar is an excellent alternative to a shaker; hence the taste of your green tea shots will not be spoiled.

How to Make a Green Tea Shot?

No brains are needed here! Putting all the ingredients together will not be a challenging task. It’s pretty simple, without taking much of your time.

To make a green tea shooter, just bring your shot glass, and follow these steps. The refreshing Jameson green tea shot will be ready in no time.

1. Mix the Ingredients in a Cocktail Shaker

Combine equal amounts of whiskey, peach schnapps, and sour mix in a cocktail shaker. Put a couple of ice cubes in there as well.

2. Shake

After you put all the ingredients in a shaker, shake vigorously for about 10 seconds to ensure everything is well combined.

3. Get Your Shot Glasses Ready

Take a shot glass, and start pouring your green tea shot mixture until the glass is about 3/4 full. Use a bar strainer to make sure the ice cubes don’t fall in.

4. Top It With Lemon-Lime Soda or Lemonade

Add a splash of lemon-lime soda like Sprite or lemonade to each shot. The lemon juice will give a fresh note to this sweet-sour whiskey drink.

5. Serve and Enjoy

Shortly after you’re done preparing your refreshing beverage, serve it in shot glasses and enjoy its sweet and sour flavor.

How to Make the Sweet and Sour Mix at Home?

Although you can easily find the sweet and sour mix in most grocery stores or liquid stores, for some of you, the store-bought version is not well balanced (the sweetness tends to take over).

Hence, it’s best to make one at home.

Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons sugar (for the simple syrup)
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/4 cup fresh lime juice
  • 1/4 fresh lemon juice

Method

  • Pour the sugar and water into a small saucepan and simmer at low temperature until the sugar melts.
  • Place your simple syrup into a bowl and let it cool down.
  • Combine it with the lemon and lime juice, and add a nip of salt.
  • Place the sour mix into a mason jar, and let it rest in the refrigerator for ten days.

You can adjust your sour mix according to your liking – reduce the sugar, or add an extra splash of lemon-lime juice.

The greenish color mostly comes from the sour mix. Hence, the bright green color of the green tea shot is no longer a mystery!

Tips and Alternatives

Next to the classic version of the green tea shot, you’ll find a couple of alternatives that have become quite popular over the years.

Hence, if you want to try out a different mix of alcohol, or just a slightly altered version of the green tea shot, check out the cocktail recipes.

Use a Larger Glass to Make Proper Cocktails

If you don’t like having your drink in one gulp, try making a green tea cocktail instead of a shoot!

Put the shoot glasses aside, and pour the mix into a larger glass. Increase the amount of Sprite or lemonade, shake, and serve over ice to get that extra cold feel.

You’ll have all the goodies from the Irish whiskey, peach Schnapps, and sour mix, but with an extra lemon-lime soda.

White Tea Shot Recipe

Instead of making a simple whiskey shot, you’ll be making a simple vodka shot. What you need is:

  • 1-ounce vodka
  • 1-ounce peach schnapps
  • 0.5-ounce simple syrup (sugar and water)
  • 0.5-ounce lemon juice

Put everything in a cocktail shaker, add ice and give the white tea mix a vigorous shake. Pour into a shot glass, and your drink is ready to be served.

Tokyo Iced Tea Shot

The difference between the green tea shot recipe and a Tokyo iced tea shot is that the ‘Tokyo’ version has more alcohol and additional ingredients.

To make this rich drink, use:

  • Midori melon liqueur, gin, rum, tequila, vodka (equal amount)
  • Soda (Sprite)
  • Sweet and sour mix
  • Lemon wedge

It’s a drink with a pungent taste, usually served in a tall glass with ice cubes.
