You can do a lot worse than redesigning your bedroom around your favourite hotel rooms, but what makes them so good in the first place?

You can do a lot worse than redesigning your bedroom around your favourite hotel rooms, but what makes them so good in the first place?

For some people, it’s the cleanliness of the air and the crispness of the bedding, while others fall in love with the style of furniture and décor.

The good news is you can replicate that hotel room feel at home with a few simple tricks of the trade, and most don’t cost the earth.

Get a quality mattress

5-star hotels all have one thing in common – they invest in mattresses that always hit the spot no matter who’s sleeping on them.

There are a few tricks to this:

Hybrid technology or pocket springs are the best for support and motion isolation. Avoid open coil and pure foam mattresses.

Firmness. Either medium or medium firm. Medium is perfect for people weighing up to 180 lbs, while medium firm is better for people weighing up to 210 lbs. Back sleepers should lean towards medium firm, side sleepers to medium.

Look to spend between £400 and £600 for a king.

Invest in quality bedding

Nothing screams luxury like crisp, white sheets.

Splash out on high–thread–count cotton—400 or above—and you’ll feel like you’re floating on a cloud.

Don’t skimp on pillows, either. A mix of firm and soft options lets you create the plush, layered look and feel that hotels excel at.

Side sleepers do best with a firm pillow, back sleepers need a softer one, and most front sleepers prefer sleeping without a pillow.

Duvets should be season-rated – meaning get a summer duvet and a winter duvet rather than just an all-season one – with a hollowfibre filling.

Hollowfibre is hypoallergenic and highly breathable, superior to duck down and other animal products. Prefer down? A ‘feels like down’ product can work well (these have chopped microfibre fillings).

Create a clutter-free zone

Ever notice how hotel rooms never have piles of laundry or stacks of books lying about? That’s because clutter kills the vibe faster than you can say “room service”.

Invest in clever storage solutions – an ottoman bed is a game-changer – and keep surfaces clear. A tidy room instantly feels more luxurious.

Layer your lighting

Hotels nail ambience and atmosphere with their lighting schemes and use mirrors and metallic décor to reflect light.

Ditch your harsh overhead pendant light for a Sputnik chandelier, soft glow flush ceiling light, or something wild with rattan.

Pop a dimmer switch on your wall, and you can create the perfect mood for reading, relaxing, and watching TV.

Add a touch of green

A bit of nature, with plants and wooden elements, goes a long way toward creating the fresh, airy feel of a top-notch hotel room.

Pop a few low-maintenance plants around – think peace lilies or snake plants – or treat yourself to a vase of fresh flowers. Faux flowers also work well.

Purify the air

Electronic air purifiers use HEPA and carbon filters to remove troublesome odours, pollen, dust, and other nasties from your bedroom air.

The best hotels also use air conditioning to cool down their rooms and filter the air—you can get portable air conditioners to do the same.

Embrace neutral tones

Hotels tend to use calming, neutral palettes for a good reason: they’re universally appealing and create a sense of calm.

Think soft greys, warm whites, and earthy tones. If you’re craving colour, add it through accessories rather than going all-out on the walls.

Accent pillows, rugs, artwork, and books provide opportunities to add pops of colour without overloading your bedroom.
