Living in a home that’s infested with pests presents several health risks for your family. Therefore, the moment you notice signs of an infestation, you should take immediate action. While the majority of pests will seem harmless, they can cause a lot of diseases. Read on to find out how pests can affect the health of your family.

Mosquitoes

The first thing everyone thinks about when they hear the word mosquitoes is how annoying these creatures are. However, apart from being annoying, they can cause disease. Recently, a new disease was discovered, which is transmitted by mosquitoes. This viral disease is caused by a pathogen called the Zika virus. This mosquito-borne illness is a real threat to the health of your family, and it’s no laughing matter. Apart from the Zika virus, mosquitoes also transmit the West Nile Virus and Eastern Equine Encephalitis. The latter can result in an inflammatory condition of the brain and spinal cord. In some instances, it can even cause death.

Cockroaches

Almost everyone hates cockroaches. Unfortunately, these creatures multiply fast. They are scavengers by nature, and they move around in search of food. As they are doing so, they will leave their droppings and saliva all over the house. Apart from that, parts of their bodies also fall off, and you will even find dead cockroaches lying all over. The saliva, droppings, and body parts of cockroaches can trigger allergic reactions. They also exacerbate asthma symptoms. To avoid getting sick, you must get rid of cockroaches as soon as you notice their presence in your home. Though somewhat surprisingly, it was found that ants are the most problematic pest for most people, followed by cockroaches and spiders.

Rodents

While rodents might seem cute, they can also be a real threat to the health of your family. Most people don’t view them as a threat, and some even keep them as pets. However, the truth is these little creatures are known to carry about 35 known diseases. Rodents spread illnesses in several ways. For instance, they can bite you or contaminate your food and water with their feces. Apart from that, inhaling pathogens found in the urine of rodents can also cause diseases. This means you must find ways to exterminate them as soon as you detect their presence.

Bed bugs

Bed bugs don’t transmit diseases to humans. However, there are some people who are allergic to their bites. As a result, when bitten, such people tend to scratch the bite site, which can cause it to become inflamed and infected. Apart from that, bed bugs can also create mental health concerns. For instance, if your house develops a bed bug infestation, you can end up suffering from depression, insomnia, and stress.

Pests Affect Air Quality

It is a well-known fact that having pests in your home can affect the quality of air. This is because some pests will dig and burrow into your home. This causes dust and debris to fly around the house. Having such an environment can trigger allergies in children. This is also risky for people with conditions like asthma. Having dusty air that is filled with debris can trigger symptoms. When it comes to burrowing, termites are quite notorious. They damage about 600,000 homes in the United States each year. Apart from termites, ants can also burrow into the walls and floors. A supercolony of ants can have about 300 million of them.

Pests can cause serious health problems for your family if you don’t get rid of them. As such, you must ensure that you eliminate them as soon as you see them. The more they multiply in your home, the more the health of your family is threatened. Apart from that, they can also cause serious damage to your property. For instance, termites can burrow into your home and affect its structural integrity. A house can even collapse because of termites if they are not eliminated quickly.
