VEGETARIANISM: MY HORROR STORY

Today I want to share my Paleo Weight Loss Story.

It may sound a little extreme to make a statement like โ€œI survived vegetarianismโ€ due to the fact that people often use the word survived when relatingย  to something earth shattering or tragic, like cancer or the death of a loved one.ย  However, when I became a vegetarian and the young age of 19, I had no idea of the damaging health effects that it would cause down the road.

Let me start at the beginning.ย  On a whim at 19, I decided to give up meat.ย  I was a lacto-ovo vegetarian so I did still eat dairy and eggs. ย At first, I felt great. ย I lost weight. ย I was happy that I could โ€œliveโ€ without meat. ย  I started to eat lots of soy and became a master at whipping up a fantastic meatless meal.

Iโ€™ll ย admit that most of my vegetarian meals were centered around tons of carbs (gluten-free sourdough bread and white potatoes) and sugar. ย  9 out of 10 meals were brown and a majority of the fruits andย vegetablesย I ate came in the form of processed foods- i.e. french truffle fries.

Fast forward 4 years and Iโ€™m pushing into a size 28. ย Iโ€™m having panic attacks, depression, night terrors and anxiety. ย Iโ€™d never experienced any of this before ย and I never connected ย that my diet was the reason I was suffering. ย I had just graduated from college and was living with my parents. ย I had my first crappy job and I managed to lose 75lbs by following a low-fat and low-calorie diet. ย I might look hot but Iโ€™m suffering mentally. ย I donโ€™t tell anyone. ย I think Iโ€™m becomingย schizophrenic or bipolar. ย  I get through it with prayer and move to Portland.

I donโ€™t realize that due to myย vegetarianism, Iโ€™m ย not getting enough B12 in my diet and it wonโ€™t be until 5 more years of anxiety, depression and panic attacks that I come acrossย Weston A Priceย when I stumble on to raw milk during my 6 month stint as a raw vegan. ย Iโ€™ve also gained back most the weight that I lost when I moved away from home.

I decide to start eating meat again and my first taste of bacon was, well, it wasn’t fantastic but Iโ€™m sure I didn’t start off with some amazing brand like Nieman Ranch. ย  I kept it up and start mixing in bone broths and cod liver and was finally finding some relief. ย It isn’t until a year later when I foundย Marks Daily Appleย ย when I made the decision to give up all grains and sugar that I find balance and feel whole again. ย For the first time my brain is humming with happiness. ย Iโ€™m eating loads of fat, protein and veggies and losing weight. ย  I lost 60 pounds and then I got pregnant.

Now Iโ€™m 15 pounds away from where I started pre-pregnancy and hoping toย actuallyย lose 30 pounds. ย  Iโ€™m trying to get my footing back on to this path and need to tackle kicking sugar again and working in more fitness. ย You can follow my journey ย in myย weightย loss girl series. ย  ย I am by no means a Paleo purist. ย I think itโ€™s easy to slap a label on someone but in truth,ย everythingย in life is multifaceted. ย  I will always enjoy raw milk and cheese in my diet (ok, read this to learn if cheese is paleo). ย I may reduce how much I eat but Iโ€™ll never say no to it.

I donโ€™t have many photos of myself from the Large years and I had to dig for one to show you where I started from before I went Paleo. ย  I was actually bigger than this at two points of my life.

You can see current photos of me here in my paleoย weight loss journey.

Mr. ย Bejelly also joined me on this diet and not only has he lostย weight, heโ€™s noย longerย dealing with acidย re fluxย issues. ย Weโ€™re raising our son on this diet and I fear for when he hits the teenage years as heโ€™s already aย veraciousย meat-eater. ย  ย Are you thinking about giving up grains or already following the lifestyle? Iโ€™d love to hear your story.

  1. Wow, good for you but I’m sorry to hear of such a yo-yo experience you’ve had. We tend to eat a lot of carbs and sugars in my house though our portions are not that big. Still, I’ve not lost all my pre-pregnancy weight…and that was 11 years ago! I do hope concentrate on eating better again and add in some light exercise. It will help me as well as set a better example for my daughter.

    1. Thank you TerriAnn. Being a vegetarian was the wrong path for me and I’m just happy to have found a diet that works for me and makes me whole again. Good luck on your fitness journey. I know how hard it is to stay motivated!

  2. We tend to eat a lot of carbs and sugars in my house though our portions are not that big. Thanks for sharing your story.

  3. Thanks for sharing your story, Bejelly! I too was a vegetarian since my teenage years (I’m 30 now) until I stumbled upon the Paleo diet last year. I haven’t lost much weight yet but I’m tightening up my dairy and fruit intake and feeling like a whole new me. Good luck on your journey!

    1. Thanks Jen! I hope you see some changes by tightening up dairy and fruit. I am an admitted dairy addict and I also need to get back into yoga ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. I am an 8 year vegetarian and it’s funny because it’s something I look as having “survived” too. I too was heavy as a vegetarian even though I only ate low fat rice, fat free potatoes and fat free tofu! I couldn’t understand it and worst of all I was always HUNGRY! I too found Paleo and it was really scary at first to start eating meat again but I am so happy I did! I have EASILY lost 10 lbs in 5 weeks and feel soooooo good! I no longer feel hungry all the time and am REALLY enjoying food for the first time! I look forward to reading your journey — best wishes to you!

    1. Thank you Coco! I love this diet and I feel blessed to have found something that works for me. Congrats on your weight loss!
