During the long, dark winter months, it can be easy to get bored of the way that you style yourself every day. If you want to have some fun mixing up your appearance and trying out new looks this winter, here are a few ideas of where to start.

1. Get New-to-You Jewelry

The easiest way to refresh your wardrobe is to add new jewelry. Although that jewelry doesn’t necessarily have to be brand-new — it can just be new to you. With 11,000 pawn shops across the U.S. and thrift stores as well, you can get reasonably priced used jewelry in quite a few places. Chunky gold jewelry is very in right now, but any piece that you think will fit your style can add a new, fun touch to your look.

2. Try Vintage-Inspired Clothes

There is always a vintage-inspired trend floating around, and right now the predominant ones are the 70s and the early 2000s. Both eras are indicated by fun prints, bright colors, and over the top looks, so whether you want a fur-trimmed cropped jacket or a pair of bell-bottom jeans, you can play with incorporating elements of vintage fashion into your look with only one to two new pieces.

3. Play With Textures

If you’re trying to add some fun and new to your wardrobe, a new texture is a great way to do that. Right now velvet, leather, and denim and very trendy. You probably already have denim in the form of jeans, but you can mix it up by buying a jean jacket or denim purse. Just make sure not to wear too much denim at once unless you’re trying to mimic the iconic outfits from the 2001 VMAs.

The safest way to incorporate leather into your wardrobe is with a jacket, but if you want to make it more fun, you can try for a jacket shape that’s less traditional than a biker jacket. Something like a blazer or duster can be a real statement piece and bring something entirely new to your wardrobe. If you’re feeling very daring, leather pants are also very on-trend right now and are a huge statement piece in any outfit.

Velvet is a very versatile fabric, and you can find a multitude of clothing items made of the fabric. From sweatpants to bodysuits, any clothing piece you can think of, there’s likely a velvet version of it. To play it a little safer, you can opt for a velvet dress or shirt, and if you want to go a bit bolder, something like a pair of leggings or a blazer may be your best bet.

4. Go Bold With Your Makeup

Bold makeup has been on-trend for a few seasons, and it seems to just be burning brighter during these dark and dreary months. You can add a pop of color using your lipstick with shades of red or purple, or you can do a bold, solid color on your eyelid. Electric blue is one of the colors being used heavily right now, but whatever color is best for your complexion can be used. Make sure if you’re going for this trend that you choose one facial feature to use bright colors on — if you try to highlight too many features, it’s very easy for colors to end up clashing or distracting from each other.

5. Get Heavy Metal

Metallic eye makeup is very trendy this season, and this trend goes hand in hand with bold eye makeup. Using metallic eyeshadow all over your lids is one way to incorporate the trend, but if that’s a bit too much for you, you can also try out metallic eyeliner. Your metallic eyeliner will look way fancier if you have thick and longer eyelashes. You can simply do eyelash extensions at home, just make sure the set is customized to your natural eye shape and length of lashes. Adding rhinestones to your makeup is also trending right now, so if you really want a bold look, you can channel your inner Euphoria character and add some jewels to your makeup look. 6. Try New Skin Care Products

Whether you’re part of the 40% of people worldwide who have sensitive skin or not, you’re probably experiencing dryness due to the winter weather. One thing to try is ditching your makeup wipes — they’ve proven to be harsh on our skin, and they are not very environmentally friendly either. Instead, try an oil-based makeup remover on reusable cotton rounds.

You can also try out some more intense or heavy moisturizers in the winter. Overnight moisturizing masks are very popular right now since they hold the moisturizer on your skin overnight and help it really absorb and sink in. Make sure to consult a dermatologist before trying any new products, especially if you do have sensitive skin.

7. Try a Hair Mask

If you’ve been noticing your hair drying out during the coldest months of the year, a hair mask can be a great option. Hair masks often function like conditioner, but they sit on your hair for a little bit longer and are meant to only be used one to two times a week. They’re a great addition to your self-care routine, and they can make your hair feel very cared for and soft.

8. Invest in Braces

Have you been meaning to get braces for years, but you’ve been constantly putting them off? If you get braces as an adult you’re not alone — 25% of those that have braces are over the age of 18. There are now options that make it less obvious that you have braces, like Invisalign and other clear retainer-based brands. With the COVID-19 pandemic happening right now, you’ll likely have most of your social interaction via video calls right now, which means you’ll have time to get braces without having to wear them out in public or in front of others for long periods of time.

If you feel stuck in a rut with your fashion, makeup, or hygiene this winter, these tips can help you refresh your routine and add some much-need life. Whether you’re adding a pair of leather pants to your wardrobe, incorporating a bit more sparkle in your makeup looks, or finally investing in braces, these ideas can serve as jumping off points for you to incorporate your own style into them.
