Most people would agree that they feel challenged in 2020. This year has changed so many things, and many individuals grapple with depression and anxiety. There are now over 220,000 pandemic deaths, and lots of people feel stress about the presidential election.
However, while there are some things happening in the world you canโt control, there are others that you can and should. You may need some spiritual refreshment and revitalization. When we say spirit, we mean that invisible, intangible life-spark deep inside you.
Your spirit gives you your vitality and toughness in adversityโs face, but this year may have worn it down. Here are some thoughts as to what you can do to balance yourself as we get closer to wrapping up this decadeโs first tumultuous year.
Meditation
You might say that youโre a spiritual person. That means something different for everyone.
Feeling spiritual might mean something as simple as seeking a butter alternative for vegans because you donโt want to be animal-dependent. Maybe it means driving less to lower your carbon footprint or recycling more.
One way everyone can revitalize their spirit, though, is by meditating. Meditation:
- Lets your body relax
- Allows your mind to focus
You can meditate in the morning or at the dayโs end. You might even do so for a few minutes during your lunch hour if you have a convenient place nearby.
If you donโt know how to meditate yet, many YouTube videos can help you. There are also lots of meditation apps that can give you some tips on how to begin. Simply sitting comfortably or lying down and focusing on your breathing for a while is a great place to start.
Start Taking a Martial Art
You can also find spirit revitalization through martial arts. There are many ones you can try, such as:
- Karate
- Tai Kwon Do
- Judo
You might look for a specific one that interests you, or you may see whatโs available in your area. Martial arts classes usually do not cost very much, and youโre never too old to start training.
Martial arts are ideal for spiritual rejuvenation because they combine meditation, physical activity, and comradery. Youโll get in better shape, and youโll also get out some aggression by beating up heavy bags or sparring. Youโll start looking forward to your classes as one of your weekโs best parts.
Take Walks in the Woods
Many individuals feel spirit-weary because theyโre living somewhere with no nature nearby. If you live in a crowded metropolis, itโs critical to seek public parks or other green spaces.
You can go there for walks multiple times each week. Seeing the seasons change and being amongst flora and fauna will make you see your life and humanity differently.
Sometimes humans forget that weโre animals too, and weโre not supposed to live every moment with concrete and steel surrounding us. It can stifle our joy and creativity. Being out in nature regularly can be a spiritual battery recharge that so many of us sorely need.
Visit Friends
One reason why the spirit suffers in 2020 is because of Covid-19. With the pandemic still going on, you canโt always be close to the people you love.
However, itโs okay to visit a friend or loved ones in many instances, as long as you wear a mask and practice strict social distancing. You canโt give them a big hug, but you can at least sit in the same room with them and talk.
If thatโs too risky because you or they have an immunocompromised condition, you can speak to them on the phone regularly or do a Skype call. Thatโs sure to make you both feel better.
Get Off Social Media
Another thing you can do for your spirit is to take a social media break. Maybe youโre checking Facebook, Twitter, etc. to keep up with the news. Thereโs nothing wrong with that till you start feeling stress or anxiety when you see whatโs happening in the world.
It can be spirit-crushing if youโre in a negativity bubble. Itโs socially responsible to keep up with whatโs happening in the country and around the globe, but you should ease up if itโs negatively impacting your mental health.
Get off of social media and stop checking the news incessantly for at least a few days. Donโt feel surprise if it makes your days immeasurably better.
Do these things, and refresh your spirit. These are all actions you can take when events seem out of your control.
