The Ongmies treadmill display helps you keep track of your workout progress by showing your current speed, time spent, heart rate (when you’re holding onto the handles), and calories burned (estimated).

It also has 12 predefined workout programs for varying intensity levels to help you get started more easily. And thanks to the ethylene vinyl acetate material that it’s made of, it can withstand decent levels of workout intensity.

Compared to most electric treadmills in this price range, the Ongmies Folding Treadmill has a relatively small but tall frame. The entire machine measures 46.5″ L x 23.6″ W x 53.5″ H, making it a good fit for those with limited space.

Despite its seemingly small and narrow frame, the deck is actually quite long and wide compared to the other machines on this list, as it’s 16″ W x 44″ L, so it’s a good fit for larger users.

The Ongmies treadmill also comes with adjustable inclination levels, so you can up your workout intensity as you progress. But unfortunately, the main drawback of this machine is the lack of a magnetic safety key.

Specifications:

  • Belt dimensions: 16″ width by 44″ length (40 x 111 cm)

For starters, the treadmill’s dashboard is pretty big and has two cup holders, an MP3 auxiliary jack, a 5-inch LCD screen, and buttons for choosing from 15 exercise programs.

Yes, you read that right; there are 15 programs, divided into three intensity modes and nine preset programs designed to mimic physical activity (walking, jogging, or even running) on natural terrain.

The screen is quite good, too, as it displays your current speed, time spent, calories burned, and heart rate, which it measures through sensors in the side handles. Moreover, the display is adjustable so that you can view it intuitively, regardless of your height or posture.

As with other budget-friendly motorized treadmills, the Anwick Home Treadmill is made for walking and jogging rather than running. However, you can amp up the intensity by increasing incline levels, which this machine has three at 0.6, 2.1, and 2.1 slope angles.

The Anwick Home Treadmill is also very portable, thanks to its lightweight frame of only 64 lbs (32 kg) and folding design. Despite this, the alloy steel frame is quite durable.

The drawback of the Anwick treadmill is its small frame. Although its ‎52″ L x 24.6″ W x 48.8″ H is great for saving space, its 14″ deck width is a bit narrow.

Specifications:

  • Belt Dimensions: 14″ width by 41″ length (35 x 104 cm)

The Poteti Under Desk Treadmill is a lightweight machine with a minimalist design that can give you the workout you’re looking for at a low price.

It measures a reasonably small 51.5″ L x 23.5″ W and has a light weight of 55 lbs (25 kg). And its frame is quite slim, too, so you can set it up in a small dorm room or studio apartment and then easily store it almost anywhere, even under your bed.

If you see the Poteti 2-in-1 treadmill, you can easily mistake it for a manual treadmill because of its frame and price. However, it’s fully electric with a motorized belt and a standard treadmill console integrated into a touchscreen LCD.

The screen displays calories burned, time, distance walked, and speed, though there are no heart rate test functions. But I can tolerate that, considering the Poteti treadmill is a budget machine that still provides many features.

My favorite feature of the Poteti treadmill is its ability to convert into a desk treadmill simply by removing the support handles and dashboard. Then, you can power it using the red start button on its remote control to stay active during your desk duties.

Unfortunately, at such a price, the Poteti treadmill is limited by its 1 HP motor that provides a limited maximum speed of 4 miles per hour. Regardless, this is alright for a walking treadmill.

Specifications:

  • Belt Dimensions: 15″ width by 41″ length (38 x 104 cm)
  • Inclination: None

The Fitnessclub 2HP Folding Treadmill pushes the boundaries of what’s possible in treadmills under $200 through features and design choices that provide an intense experience.

For starters, the LED display is superior to the LCDs I’m used to in other treadmills at this price range. It’s placed at an intuitive angle that’s easy to read on it during your walk. And it displays typical features such as distance, time, calories burned, speed, and heart rate, which it scans on the handrails.

At only 54 lbs (24.5 kg), the Fitnessclub 2HP treadmill is relatively light for a motorized treadmill, even at this price range, where treadmills tend to be on the lighter side.

Despite this light weight, the Fitnessclub treadmill is a durable machine, thanks to the mix of alloy steel, metal, acrylonitrile, butadiene styrene, and plastic that make up its frame. As for its digital features, this treadmill has 12 interval programs with varying intensities.

Apart from that, there’s not much I can complain about apart from the motor, which can get noisy as you reach the end of your workout.

Specifications:

  • Belt Dimensions: 15″ width by 41″ length (38 x 104 cm)
  • Inclination: three levels

The Fitnessclub 2HP treadmill certainly has some flashy features, which I found perfect for a rigid affordable treadmill like this one. It works well and also has 12 programs to help you get started.

How to Pick an Electric Treadmill Under $200

Treadmills are already somewhat delicate devices that must be sturdy enough to withstand thousands of stomps without breaking down. And when you’re looking for an affordable option, it’s even more challenging to avoid the dodgy models that fill the market.

So I decided to write this quick guide for buying an electric treadmill. These factors will help you finalize your purchase while getting the most value out of your buck.

Belt Size (Treadmill Running Surface Width)

Belt size defines the treadmill running surface length and width. The rule of thumb is that the more walking or running surface you have, the merrier since it gives you wiggle room to move freely without stumbling. However, you don’t always have to choose an enormous belt size.

For most walkers, a 15″ width by 42″ length (38 x 106 cm) belt is enough since your footprints tend to be less scattered while walking, but you shouldn’t go lower than these dimensions, just in case.

In contrast, runners need oversized belt rollers of at least 20″ width by 60″ length (50 x 150 cm), which should be enough for most users of tall stature and under. If you’re tall or wide, you’ll need a bigger running surface, but note that they tend to be pricier.

Maximum Weight Capacity

Treadmill manufacturers provide a maximum weight capacity for each model, typically between 200-300 lbs (90-136 kg). This value refers to the manufacturer’s estimate of how much weight the deck can handle.

However, this weight capacity is often the most conservative estimate that’ll not stress your treadmill’s motor. In reality, treadmills might be able to withstand more weight, but doing so might void your warranty.

Another critical consideration for runners is the force you hit the deck with after every stomp. That alone can be 2-3 times your body weight, if not more. So if you weigh 200 lbs, you might need to look for a treadmill with at least 400 lbs of weight capacity.

Folding Treadmill

Some treadmills, even at this price range, are foldable for easy storage and portability. If you have a small space, then you’ll want to look for a folding treadmill that’ll make space saving easier. A folding treadmill also offers easy storage, so that’s another point to keep in mind for users in small spaces.

Display

Display screens are a rudimentary feature in treadmills to the point that you’ll likely find them even in a manual treadmill. But when looking for a motorized machine, it’s good to consider what the display screen is capable of.

LCD screens are common in budget treadmill models because they’re more affordable, while you’re more likely to find a LED display in more expensive machines.

But your primary focus should be on what the screen displays. The most important metrics to look for are time, distance, and speed. Additionally, calories burned and heart rate can help you track your workouts.

Incline Positions

Many treadmills come at a zero incline, but others let you change the incline levels from 0% (neutral) to 15% (steep). Some models even allow for much more vertical incline positions of 20%-30%.

Higher incline levels translate to more intense workouts because they require more effort, like running up a hill or ramp. This allows you to up the intensity to get more out of your training in less time. But it’s up to you whether or not you need your treadmill to incline.

Electric vs. Manual Treadmill

Knowing the difference between an electric and manual treadmill is necessary to widen your search options. Electric treadmill machines are a self-powered workout essential for most gyms and at least medium-end home gym setups.

When searching for an affordable treadmill, especially on such a restricted budget, you need to evaluate your expectations of the machine and consider how you’ll use it. Because the sad truth is that most electric models under $200 won’t suit people who require more intense workout programs.

For example, if you’re training for marathons or want to jog or sprint for 10 minutes or more every day, your budget electric treadmill might not cut it.

But when you consider manual treadmills, your options are much broader. You can often easily find a quality treadmill under $200 that operates manually. But there are a few catches.

Almost every manual treadmill has a curved or slightly inclined treadmill belt to help you maintain your momentum while running. As a result, you’ll get more intense exercise in a shorter duration.

Crucially, manual treadmills don’t have preinstalled workouts, so you’ll also have to know what you’re doing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a Treadmill Enough to Lose Weight?

Running on a treadmill is a great way to perform cardio to boost your heart health while you burn calories, which can help you lose weight.

What Is a Good Speed to Walk on a Treadmill?

For most people, an average walking speed of 2-4 mph (3-6.5 kph) is enough for weight maintenance and overall fitness improvement. For more intensity, better workout output, and faster results, try progressing to power walking or light jogging of 5-6 mph (8-10 kph) before moving on to a more intense speed range.

Is 30-Minute Walking on the Treadmill Enough?

Your workout time depends on your goals. If you want to maintain weight with a neutral diet, walking for about 20 minutes daily or 30-45 minutes four times a week is enough. For weight loss, you need to amp it up to 30-45 minutes of walking on the treadmill daily.

How Long Does It Take To See Results From a Treadmill?

You should already notice your performance increasing only a week or two after starting regular exercise on the treadmill. However, physical results could take at least 2-4 weeks, depending on your overall activity levels and calories burned daily.

Final Verdict

Treadmills are notoriously expensive workout devices. However, you don’t need to be put off by their hefty price tags since you can still get a good machine for a reasonably small amount, though you’ll need to get behind the idea of “you get what you pay for” and tolerate some limitations.

You can get an excellent motorized folding treadmill for less than $200, such as the Ongmies Folding Electric Treadmill, which is rigid and performs well for its price tag.

Smaller models like the Anwick 2.5HP Home Treadmill and Poteti Under Desk Treadmill can help you get your daily steps in without leaving too much of a footprint in your house.
