Baking requires patience and precision, and many people don’t think they can do it. However, you can become a quality baker and make amazing desserts, breads, and more with a few tips, whether you are baking bread or making microwave rice pudding. Keep reading to learn more:

Ensure a Flaky Pie Crust

To make sure your pie crust is flaky, make sure you only use cold ingredients. Keeping the dough for the crust from getting dense requires you to handle it gently and only dust flour on the counter or rolling pin. Put the dough in your refrigerator for approximately 30 minutes, making it easier to roll.

Measuring Oils and Syrups

Rinse your measuring cup in hot water, or coat it using cooking spray before measuring oils or syrups. This will prevent anything from sticking to the cup when you pour.  This makes it easier to get honey out of measuring cups.

Softening Butter

There are a few ways you can soften butter quickly. The first method is to cut the butter into small pieces, spread it on a plate, and allow the pieces to thaw quickly rather than trying to soften the entire stick.

Another option is to microwave the whole stick for five to 10 seconds at a time. Just be sure to watch it closely to keep it from melting completely. The last method is putting the butter in a water bath. Just make sure the butter is wrapped in a resealable plastic bag so the water doesn’t actually touch it.

Make Your Own Buttermilk

If you’ve ever run out of buttermilk when baking, you can make your own by combining one cup of milk with one tablespoon of lemon juice. Once mixed, let it stand for 10 minutes.

Know When Yeast Breads Are Done

If you have a hard time determining if your yeast bread is done, consider using a digital thermometer. When it reaches 200 degrees Fahrenheit, you know the bread is done.

Make Your Own Heavy Cream

Do you need heavy cream for a recipe you want to make? If so, you can combine 1/3 cup of melted, unsalted butter with 2/3 cup of whole milk. Combining these ingredients will give you one cup of heavy cream. While this is a great strategy for baking and recipes, it should not be used for coffee, whipped cream, or homemade ice cream.

Store Spices Properly

Make sure your spices are kept in a dark, cool place. Humidity, heat, and light will result in your spices and herbs losing their flavor.

Keep Nuts and Berries Off the Base of the Dish

When you bake with berries or nuts, you know they tend to sink. This can be frustrating if you want them throughout the dish. A good way to solve this problem is by tossing the items with flour before putting them in your batter.
