biggest real food deals at thrive market

So, I feel like I’m late to the party when it comes to Thrive Market.  Amazon has changed my life when it comes to shopping and, well, I just didn’t want to learn another site and, yeah, just pure laziness.

However, when it comes to saving money, I can make exceptions.

When I got my rebate from Costco and saw that I had essentially had not used the store enough to warrant the  $100  membership fee, I decided it was time to look into Thrive Market.

Yes, Thrive Market is a membership site, just like Costco, but there are some key differences.

  1. You order online and get these items shipped to your home.  No driving and fighting your kids in the store!
  2. There are so many more organic, GMO-free Paleo and  Gluten-free food items (not to mention a plethora of home goods, kids and baby products, beauty  products and health stuff)
  3. The savings compared to Amazon are staggering.  It’s shocking how much money you can save on real food from Thrive Market.  Yes, I am a Amazon Prime member ($99 per year)  and a huge fan who is not going anywhere but wow.
  4. The membership cost is $59.95 a year but you can start with a 30 Day Free Trial here.   When you purchase a membership, Thrive also sponsors a low-income family.

If you are already paying a membership fee to Costco or another larger grocery store chain, you might want to consider Thrive Market. You have likely already heard of Thrive as I feel that I am a bit late to the game when it comes to reviewing it. However, if you have not heard of Thrive or you are considering a new place to shop, here are some things that I have learned.

What is Thrive Market?

Thrive Market is an online grocery store. The company touts itself as having the best non-GMO organic products at a discounted price of 25 percent off for regular consumers and 50 percent off retail prices for members.

Memberships come in two forms, a yearly membership is $59.95 a month billed once per year. If you choose a monthly membership, you will pay $9.95 per month. Shipping is free on your first order of $25 or more, and all orders over $49. Thrive currently ships to all of the contiguous states in the US.

There are several ways to get started. You can sign up for free and browse through the store. This will allow you to look over membership pricing and get 25% off your first order. Another option is to start a thirty-day free trial membership. You can cancel at any time. The final option is to simply join as a member. When you pay for a membership, you also sponsor a membership for a low-income family.

What Does Thrive Market Sell?

There are over 6000 healthy products available through Thrive Market and hundreds of categories. Food, bath and body, health, home, and pet supplies are free. There are staples such as meat and seafood. However, most of the items available are shelf-stable, which means that you will likely still want to get your produce from your local stores.

Who Benefits from Thrive Market?

If you research healthy foods often and have food restrictions or are following a dedicated diet, or often buy non-GMO or organic foods online, you are going to see a lot of value in a Thrive Market membership.

Using Thrive Market in Real Life

Thrive Market offers several popular organic brands such as Simple Mills and Annie’s. Also, there are store-brand items. I ordered groceries from Thrive as a way to fill up my pantry with something besides macaroni and cheese (wait, you might be wondering  is cheese paleo?). In my first order, I spent just under $100, and the listed savings was $145.32.

I found that the claims about savings really held up. When I looked over my purchase, the membership basically paid for itself with my very first order. The food that I received was delicious, and I also found many more healthy snack options that I had not tried before. I also found some of my favorite skincare products and filtered water came at a much lower cost through Thrive Market.

If you are looking for meat and seafood, Thrive offers ethically-sourced seafood in meat in bulk box options. However, the choices are a bit limited compared to the average seafood and meat counter at your regular grocery store. If you do not have a lot of freezer space, you might want to stick to purchasing meat and seafood at your regular store.

Is it Worth It?

If you are currently purchasing food online anyway or if you are presently paying a membership fee to Costco or Sam’s Club, Thrive Market might just be a better choice. I found that the savings offered on some of my favorite products really added up quite quickly. Of course, you will have to supplement with shopping at other stores for some products as there is no fresh produce available, which is kind of a bummer.

I really wish that I could only shop at Thrive Market for all of my grocery needs. However, the discounts and the delivery service for the items that are offered at Thrive Market are worth the cost of membership. As I said, my first order covered my membership fee in savings alone.

I do wish that shipping was free for all orders. However, if you plan it correctly, you will find that spending over $49 each time you shop is not hard to do. The products that you get from the store are lovely, and having it shipped directly to your door is something that you really cannot beat. I will do anything to not have to go into a store as often.

If you are still on the fence about trying out Thrive Market, you should know that the company does excellent things for communities. Their Thrive gives program provides free membership to families in need through the Boys and Girls Clubs and Feeding America programs.

I looked at a lot of products to create this list and 7 times out of 10 the price was at least $3 to $4 cheaper on Thrive when compared to Amazon.  If it wasn’t cheaper, it was the same cost, not more expensive.  To give you the best bang for your buck this round up only shares food items that are at least 40% off the price you would pay at Amazon. Most of the products are up to 75% Off.

If you went on a shopping spree and bought all of the items in this post these are the price tags you would see.

Total Cost:

Thrive Market: $276.30   Amazon: $722.25

Over a 60% Savings!

*Please note that the pricing on Amazon can fluctuate due to the stock of the item in the store.

  1. Wow! Thanks for doing that legwork for me, cuz you did basically what I’ve been thinking for a while;”I should check this out, but I got a good thing going with Amazon & I’m kinda lazy, so….” I will now seriously look into Thrive. Wonder if they have free shipping like we enjoy with Amazon tho?
Thanks again for the price comp! Makes a huge difference!!

  2. I just went to Amazon on just one of the items you have listed above, the very last one: 16 0z Wholesome Sweeteners Organic Powdered Sugar it shows the 16 oz being $8.74 and the 4.5 lb pag being $17.99. not sure where you got the cost of the 16 oz bag being over $40. While the cost at Thrive seems to be less I will have to go and check on their prices as well.

    • Thanks for sharing Kathy. When I did this post there was only 1 bag of powdered sugar in the marketplace so the price was high. Prices do fluxate on Amazon so I’ll make sure to pput a note at the top of the post sharing prices compared on 9/27/2015 and are subject to change.

  3. I shop all three as well and love Thrive and was very impressed when I realized how much I could save through them. The only issue I have with Thrive is that they don’t sell items in bulk. That is why I use Costco or Azure. For items like sliced almonds, you can’t beat Costco prices.

  4. Thanks so much Kelly…I will check out Thrive. Been wanting to do it for a while, but just didn’t feel like putting the time in. Thanks for the push 🙂

  5. I just subscribed to A Girl Worth Saving. First I tried one of your recipes and then checked out Thrive Market. I just compared prices on one item I bought on Amazon last week. $21 on Amazon compared to $15 on Thrive Market. I do all my non-perishable food shopping on Amazon. This will make a huge difference! Thanks!

  6. I use Vitacost.com — The prices are very comparable with Thrive, without the membership fee and free shipping over $50. (I don’t know what Thrive’s shipping is). I have looked at Thrive, but stick with Vitacost. I usually get my order in 2 days with great packaging.
    Just another resource!

  7. Agree with Janet about VitaCost. Have ordered from them many times as prices, range of products & customer service are top notch. Orders well packed & receive in good time as well. Plus no fee/membership required. Being retired & on limited fixed income, all factors work well for us buying from VitaCost. vs. Thrive or Amazon.
