I’ve always said that self-care is one of the most important things people can choose to do for their own health. Being healthy is about both physical and mental aspects of living a healthier life – and without the presence of self-care, it’s more difficult to achieve.

Depression and anxiety are common conditions. More cases are diagnosed every day – and if you feel like you have difficulty making it through the average day or week, then you could be part of the statistic.

Could you have depression? Could someone you know have depression without realizing it – or without seeking help?

Seeing a psychiatrist can help you to find the answer.

I’ve put together some information about depression – and why it’s important to put together a depression self care checklist to spot when depression might be getting a foothold. If this is not the type of self care checklist you were looking for check out how to create a self care checklist or check out why self care is important for men.

Let’s Talk About Depression

Depression should be talked about more.

It’s why I mention it on my blog often.

The more depression becomes a talked-about subject, the more stigma around it can start to disappear. Once we can talk about depression and its causes, it’s possible to find help and manage it.

Let’s talk about depression.

The Rates Of Depression

Rates of depression, anxiety and related conditions are increasing. If you are part of the statistic mentioned, then you might find it hard to get through the average day. Thoughts of  feeling hopeless are common for people who are depressed.

If you suspect that you are, I would first recommend that you visit a qualified psychiatrist.

Together with a self-care checklist to keep you motivated, seeking help makes a big difference.

What Is Depression?

Depression is more than just a feeling people go through.

I have noticed that many people don’t realize that depression is a physical condition that should be treated just like a cold or the flu.

Depression is many things, but it’s also something which can be managed.

What Causes Depression?

Depression is caused by chemical changes within the brain – but it can be made worse by many other factors, including stress or trauma. Sometimes depression might require “triggers” in life to show up, such as traumatic events or memories of things that might have happened.

Depression Can Be Managed, Always

Depression can always be managed and treated, but a lot of people will say that depression makes you feel too hopeless to try. If you suspect that you have depression or someone you know might be going through the symptoms, I recommend finding help as the first step.

A checklist can also help you to keep a closer eye on possible symptoms. I’ve always found that it helps for me.

What’s A Depression Self Care Checklist?

I’ve recommended the use of a depression checklist to people with depression, anxiety and related conditions for a very long time. I’ve even made one myself.

A depression checklist can be used to mark out the symptoms or emotions you commonly experience as signs of depression. When you’ve checked off enough things off this list, you know that it’s time to seek help.

A depression checklist can also be used to list (and check off) things that help your depression. When it feels like life becomes overwhelming, check your checklist.

Seeking Psychiatrist Help

Self-care is one way to manage health conditions like depression better.

Sometimes, self-care alone isn’t enough.

Seek psychiatric help to manage symptoms of depression (or any other potential mental health conditions). If you need help, it’s just an appointment with an expert away.

Spotting The Signs

Depression often means feeling hopeless and tired. Feeling like you don’t have the motivation or energy to achieve anything. It’s common – and you might not have realized there’s a name for it until I said that.

Once you spot the signs, depression is more than just a feeling. It’s something that can be diagnosed and treated.

Depression & Others

I’ve gotten a lot of e-mails from readers who want to know how to spot the signs of depression in others.

Depression can affect anyone out there. It’s not always obvious, but people can hide the signs of depression for years without anyone noticing. If you look carefully, you might be able to spot symptoms of depression in family members of friends.

I’ve put together a short list of what you should look for (and what you should do next).

How Can I Tell If Someone Is Depressed?

Depression can make someone appear distracted, or different than how you would normally know them to be. People tend to lose (or forget) their interests when they are depressed. They often also lose sight of important goals.

I’ve seen many people struggle with depression. I’ve even been there myself.

What I can say is this: Suspect depression? Seek help.

When Is Psychiatric Help Necessary?

Psychiatric assistance is recommended whenever depression shows up. There’s no easy way to say it, and no other way to express it. If you suspect depression it can always be managed – but in most cases, only with qualified and professional help.

How Can I Spot Depression In Older People?

Depression is common in everyone – but becoming especially common in the elderly and older people.

Often, this requires others to spot the symptoms. Older people often are not willing to admit they might struggle with depression, and there are many people out there who are unable to verbally express their feelings due to other conditions.

Does someone seem withdrawn or different?

Depression is likely and common.

Even if someone doesn’t seem obviously withdrawn in the way you would expect, you would know when they act different to normal. Speak to them: It might be signs of depression.

Like I’ve said before, depression should be talked about more. When it is, finding help for the condition becomes a lot easier.
